Science Scene of the Crime

The local community Police Officer stood guarding the door to the science prep room which had been taped up with police tape. Inside crime scene tape sealed off the room which had blood splattered around and muddy footprints and on further investigation a body lay lifeless on the floor surrounded in a pool of blood. Within 5 minutes scene of crime officers, geared up in their white hooded outfits and gloves, arrived to analyse the area and solve the murder. So what had gone on at Whitgift School? Had Mr Rushby really had enough of "THAT" year 9 student? Nah it was just the year 11 students completing part of their BTEC science course.

The crime scene was prepared by the science technicians, Mrs Withers and Mrs Winchester with the help of Mrs Wallis, who kindly provided the dead body. Mrs Parker's daughter is currently studying forensic crime and she came into school to help ensure that the crime scene we would set up would be realistic.

The students were expected to wear scene of crime officers' outfits to avoid contamination and they had to identify the evidence, photograph it, bag and tag it and prepare it to be analysed. They searched the scene for blood splatters, fingerprints, drugs, footprints, hair and a weapon (it appeared that our poor victim had been hit over the head with a hammer).

The students seemed to really enjoy their lesson out of the science lab and into a scene from an episode of CSI. Kristy Maddocks said "It was really good, I liked the fact it was very realistic, it was a fun lesson".
