Homework Policy 2007

The amount of homework we feel appropriate for students of different ages:

Years 7-8          30-45 minutes per day
Year 9                45 minutes - 1 hour per day
Years 10-11     Up to 1.5 hours per day

The setting and completion of homework:

College Leaders will construct a homework timetable for every year group in readiness for the start of each new academic year. In tutor time, students will then be asked to copy a bespoke version of their own homework timetable into their passport. When homework is set, students are expected to record that piece of homework in their passport, at the time of setting. Subject teachers and form tutors must check that homework is being properly recorded in passports, by students.

Students are expected to diligently complete all homework which they are set. Teachers are expected to keep a record of homework which has been set and to have in place appropriate strategies to ensure that homework is satisfactorily completed. Teachers should apply sanctions for the non-completion of homework and teachers are expected to inform parents and faculty Lead Learners if non-completion appears habitual.

Appropriate tasks for homework:

It is essential that faculty teams carefully plan homework tasks and that they are included in the faculties short and medium term planning. Homework must be linked to the Program of Study and should be designed to embed and reinforce work done in lessons, so that it leads to a greater understanding of the intended lesson outcomes. Homework time should not be used for finishing off work carried out in class and it should include higher-level tasks whenever appropriate (find out; research; compare and contrast; improve; give your opinion, etc)

Monitoring:

Lead Learners are responsible for the quality of homework within their faculties and for monitoring and evaluating the impact of homework. Lead Learners should ensure that faculty meetings include discussion of homework and provide exemplars of best practice. Lead Learners should directly challenge any teacher not following the school homework policy and inform the Head or Deputy accordingly. Lead Learners should include reference to the quality of homework at times of self-evaluation and in all QA submissions to the Headteacher.
